Scholarships and Financial Aid
Scholarships are awarded every year to rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors in the College of Engineering. The application process and scholarship opportunities vary for incoming freshmen, transfer students, and upperclassmen (see below). Undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering can also compete for national scholarships and grants. In these latter competitions usually the student applies directly to the sponsoring organization, not through Virginia Tech. These competitions are advertised by the national organizations and brochures can usually be found posted in the hallway in Randolph Hall (Mechanical Engineering). One such national scholarship competition exclusive to Mechanical Engineering students is held every spring by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Interested students should visit the ASME's web site. Other national scholarship opportunities are publicized by the University Honors Program at Virginia Tech. The Honors Program holds information sessions and small workshops throughout the academic year to encourage student participation and mechanical engineering undergraduates are eligible for many of these scholarships. For more information, interested students should visit the Honors Program web site. Other financial aid opportunities (including federal loans and grants) can be reviewed at the University Scholarships and Financial Aid web site.
The College and Departmental Application Process
Incoming freshmen, transfer students, and upperclassmen have different scholarship opportunities, but submission of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is recommended for all. It is recommended that the FAFSA application by mailed in early January for the coming academic year.
Freshmen
The Dean’s Scholar Program will provide $5000 per year for up to four (4) years of engineering undergraduate study. Davenport Leadership Scholarships provide the equivalent of in-state tuition and fees for up to four (4) years. These scholarships are available to any incoming student enrolling in the College of Engineering. Applications and additional information are available and may be downloaded from http://www.eng.vt.edu/academics/docs/deans_scholar_faq.pdf. Applications for these two scholarships are due in the beginning of February.
All remaining freshmen scholarships have no application process. Students will be considered for these scholarships based upon admission to the College of Engineering as an entering freshman student in General Engineering. Announcements of these awards will be made in June, 2007. For the most recent scholarship information, visit the College of Engineering website at http://www.eng.vt.edu/academics/scholarships_pros.php.
Transfer Students
Transfer students from Virginia's community colleges may apply for the Leo A. Padis Scholarships. Padis Scholarships are available only to Engineering Associate Degree graduates of the Virginia Community College System. Awards are $1000 and are merit based. Applications are available in the engineering departments at the community colleges in February. The application deadline is June 1.
Upperclassmen
Mechanical Engineering scholarships for upperclassmen and scholarships offered by the College of Engineering are administered together, by the College. The mechanical engineering student applies to the College in response to the application request sent out near the end of January or early February. Both the College of Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering have corporate and private support for academic scholarships at the sophomore, junior and senior levels. These competitive scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance at Virginia Tech. Each January, scholarship information is announced on the engineering opportunities listserv which is used to communicate with enrolled Virginia Tech engineering students. Rising sophomores with a cumulative 3.4 GPA or above and rising juniors and seniors with a cumulative 3.0 GPA at the end of fall semester are eligible to apply. Scholarship application forms are available online in late January. The application deadline is March 1.
During the 2006-2007 academic year, students in Mechanical Engineering were awarded scholarships with awards ranging from $500 to $7,000. Students may receive both financial aid awards based upon income and academic awards based upon achievement.
