All applicants:
Thank you for your inquiry into our program. The Mechanical Engineering Department is always interested in hearing from students who expect to continue their graduate studies. We are looking for academic excellence coupled with a high degree of motivation. If you feel that you fit this description, we encourage you to apply and to visit our campus. Students are accepted into the ME department in competition with students from across the globe. Please DO NOT send e-mails requesting advice on your chances of acceptance, as we do not have the staffing to review these requests. For additional resource information, please visit the Graduate School's web site.
In general, the Mechanical Engineering Department normally expects applicants to have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 (4.0 scale) or better for either the B.S. degree program or the last 60 hours of course work. Students applying to Mechanical Engineering must take the GRE and students whose native language is not English, must also take the TOEFL unless they have completed 30 hours at an English speaking university. The minimum acceptable score for applicants is 620 (260 computer based). Students will likely not be competitive with scores below a 450 and a 700 on the verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE, respectively. Test scores more than 2 years old should be re-taken. Scores of students recommended for acceptance are often higher. Research experience and the three letters of recommendation are a significant part of the evaluation of the application.
The department does process applications on a rolling basis. To be given FULL consideration for admission and assistantships/ fellowships, applications must be received by January 15th for the fall term and Oct. 1st for the spring term. ALL application materials should be received by the deadlines for admission. Applications are on-line via the web site: http://www.grads.vt.edu/admissions/ applying/index.html#online; paper-based applications are no longer available. Due to technical difficulties, the Graduate School has been unable to get the on-line application updated. Please be aware there are discrepancies beyond our control. See the check list below for the materials the ME Department requires.
The application fee is $45. The fee may be waived by the Graduate School for U.S. domestic students depending upon financial need. You will need to contact the Graduate School directly. Applications will not be processed unless the application fee is paid.
A COMPLETE application should be mailed in ONE large envelope to:
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Graduate Coordinator
100T-1 Randolph Hall
Blacksburg, VA 24061-0238
A complete application for the ME Department includes:
- A printed copy of the on-line application
- 3 letters of recommendation (In signed/sealed envelopes if the references do not use the on-line recommendation form.)
- Official or copy of transcripts from undergraduate and graduate universities
- Official or a copy of test scores (GRE’s & TOEFL for international students)
Applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members whose research areas most interests them by sending a resume and a cover letter (email is acceptable and preferred by most faculty).
You will be able to view the status of your application at: https://banweb.banner.vt.edu/pls/bprod/bwskalog.P_DispLoginNon. For your protection, information on application status cannot be release by telephone or to third parties. The ME Department can only recommend admission. Official notification from the Graduate School will be sent by postal mail. Estimated date for decisions to be posted for applicants in the US is March 15th for complete applications received by Jan. 15th. Estimated date for decisions to be posted for applicants outside the US is May 15th for complete applications received by Jan. 15th. Please be aware that the on-line status only indicates if the application is complete at the VT Graduate School, not necessarily with the Department.
