Andrew Lewis Middle School Career Day

Date: 12/9/2008
Location: Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem, VA
Team Participants: Stefanie Goodwin (Outreach Coordinator), Jason Christensen, Jason McCrickard
Audience: 100 6th, 7th and 8th Graders
Highlights: HEVT had several posters that displayed the team vehicle concepts for EcoCAR. HEVT representatives had flyers that discussed the mechanical engineering field, and answered any questions the students had. Several other professionals were present from other fields to discuss other potential career options, therefore the primary focus was to encourage students to pursue a career in the field of engineering.

EDTA Poster Conference

Date: 12/2/2008-12/4/2008
Location: Roanoke Civic Center
Team Participants: Logan Kraft (Business Coordinator), Lynn Gantt (Electrical Subteam Leader)
Audience: 500 Members of the General Public
Highlights: Displayed EcoCAR Posters and talked about EcoCAR competition at the Electric Drive Transportation Association Poster Conference in Washington, D.C.

Engineering Open House

Date: 11/15/2008
Highlights: Discussed our HEVT and EcoCAR projects with many prospective students and their families; several hundred were in attendance.

Association of Energy Conservation Professionals (AECP) Green Energy Exposition Fair

Date: 11/7/2008-11/8/2008
Highlights: HEVT team representatives displayed EcoCAR posters and discussed the competition parameters with members of the technical community as well as the general public.

Blacksburg Home and Transport Sustainability Fair

Date: 10/25/2008
Location Blacksburg, Va
Highlights: The Town of Blacksburg was hosting this week long event to inspire more environmentally friendly practices. HEVT team representatives met with members of the general public to discuss the EcoCAR competition, as well as team goals that include petroleum displacement and reducing green house gas emissions.

Student Engineering Council (SEC) Freshman Major Mixer

Date: 10/22/2008
Location: Blacksburg, Va
Highlights: The Student Engineering Council hosted the Freshman Major Mixer event. The Freshman Major Mixer invited current engineering freshman to see the various student organizations at Virginia Tech. Freshmen were able to consult HEVT team representatives and ask questions about the EcoCAR competition. This event was a successful recruiting event. HEVT’s involvement in the EcoCAR competition attracted interest.

Society of Environmental Journalists Event

Date: 10/18/2008
Location: Virginia Tech Transportation Institute
Highlights: HEVT team representatives met with members of the Society of Environmental Journalists to discuss the EcoCAR competition. HEVT team representatives discussed team goals that included implementing a hybrid architecture that would yield maximum petroleum displacement, as well as reduce green house gas emissions.

Virginia State Fair

Date: 9/28/2008-10/6/2008
Location: Richmond, Va
Highlights: HEVT team representatives displayed EcoCAR posters in the technology section of the Virginia State Fair. The Virginia State Fair had 243,000 members of the general public in attendance.

Student Engineering Council (SEC) Wine and Cheese Event

Date: 9/16/2008
Location: German Club Manor in Blacksburg, Va
Highlights: The Student Engineering Council (SEC) at Virginia Tech invited employers visiting for the Engineering Exposition to enjoy wine and cheese while meeting students of various organizations. HEVT team representatives met with members of the technical community to discuss the EcoCAR competition, and the exciting technologies that HEVT is implementing in the team strategy.

Virginia Tech College of Engineering Tailgate

Location: Drillfield in Blacksburg, Va
Date: 9/6/2008
Highlights: The College of Engineering at Virginia Tech invited student organizations to display their exciting work to Virginia Tech Alumni. HEVT team representatives were able to get feedback on competition plans from COE alumni.

Hokie Pep Rally

Location: Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, Va
Date: 9/5/2008
Highlights: This event invited the general public to kick off another Virginia Tech football season. The event also invited the general public to see what student organizations are currently working on. The Hybrid Electric Team at Virginia Tech (HEVT) met with attendees and discussed the parameters of the EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge competition. HEVT team representatives also discussed their plans for the competition.
