The DARPA
Grand Challenge Team
Para Every academic year,
a new class of mechanical engineering seniors begins afresh with new
ideas for Virginia Tech's biggest, fastest, toughest autonomous vehicles.
Aided by Dr. Charles Reinholtz and former students returning a graduate
team leaders, the new students and volunteers use build on VT's tradition
of autonomous vehicle excellence.
Para The 2003-2004 team
laid the groundwork for success, leveraging experience from the VT-dominated
AUVSI Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition. The 2004 entry into
the DARPA Grand Challenge, Cliff, paved the way for a new generation
of large-scale autonomous vehicles.
Para In 2004-2005, the
team rebuilt Cliff and constructed Rocky for the 2005 competition.
They developed the intelligence and reliability that carried the team
through the DARPA site visits.
Para The 2005-2006 team,
along with a contingent from the previous year, saw Cliff and Rocky
through the final tweaks and entry in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge.
With the Grand Challenge behind them, the team continues to develop
the vehicles in preparation for the VT Challenge on May 4, 2006.
