  he 2009 Fall Fluid Mechanics Symposium will take place on November 10 at The Inn at Virginia Tech and will showcase ongoing fluid mechanics research at Virginia Tech and surrounding universities. This annual event, co-sponsored by the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science and Mechanics, started in 2007 and has since provided a growing venue for dissemination of research results and community building among local fluid mechanicians.

The symposium is a collection of short presentations by faculty and students covering a broad range of fluid mechanics research. It is anticipated that the majority of these presentations will also be given at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics and the 2009 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition.

Central to this year's program will be two invited plenary presentations:

  1. Microfluidics: Electric fields, Fluids & Particles
    Nadine Aubry, Department Head and Raymond J. Lane Distinguished Professor, Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Mechanical Engineering
  2. Particle Entrainment Under Turbulent Flow Conditions
    Panayiotis Diplas, Virginia Tech, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. (Invited presentation at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics.)
  3. Abstract submission is now closed. The accepted abstracts listed under tentative sessions can be found here.

    The complete Symposium Schedule is available here.

Abstract Submission(Closed):

Abstract submission should be done online here. There is no registration fee to attend the meeting. You will need to submit the title, author list, abstract, and any special requests by October 31. The abstract should follow the APS DFD guidelines and have less than 1300 characters. The number of symposium presentations will be limited by the available time. If necessary, selection of speakers will be made with preference given to those who will be presenting at the the APS DFD meeting. Please contact Pavlos Vlachos with any questions.

Presentation Format:

We ask that all presentations follow the format of the APS DFD meeting, a 10 minute presentation followed by a 2 minute question-and-answer period. One minute will be reserved for transition between speakers. Electronic presentations are encouraged. Speakers can use their own laptop or bring a PDF copy of their presentation on a USB flash drive. Speakers can also email a PDF copy of their present ion to Pavlos Vlachos by November 7.

Venue:

The Fall Fluid Mechanics Symposium will be held at The Inn at Virginia Tech. For on campus location see this map. Coffee and light refreshments will be included throughout the day and lunch will not be included.
