In the beginning there were the dinosaurs, but they got too big and fat and they died. Then on July 16th, 1981 a savant was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Ben Duprey earned his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY in 2004. While there he had three co-ops: Saleen, Inc, Honda R&D Americas, and Continental-Teves. Upon completion of his degree Ben Duprey continued to work for Continental-Teves in the Vehicle Test Department calibrating the electronic stability control systems on full size SUVs.
Ben Duprey began Virginia Tech in the Fall of 2006 as a Masters student in Aerospace Engineering but soon came to his senses and switched to Mechanical Engineering. He is now working with Dr. Saied Taheri and his thesis consists of two parts: Part 1 is concerned with the 3 degree of freedom mathematical modeling of a 2 axle truck and is the subject of a paper recently presented at the 2008 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress and Exhibition entitled, “A New Fuzzy Based Stability Index Using Predictive Vehicle Modeling and GPS Data”, SAE paper number 2008-01-2597.
In part 2 of his thesis, Mr. Duprey will discuss the construction and implementation of a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) vehicle simulator being built by him at the Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety (CVeSS), an off-campus Virginia Tech lab located at 3103 Commerce Street in Blacksburg, Virginia.
