Ryan received an undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech in the field of mechanical engineering in 2005. During this period, he served as team leader to Tech's Formula SAE team, which develops and builds a formula style race car to compete against other schools from around the world. Upon graduation he entered into the graduate school under the advisement of Dr. Mehdi Ahmadian. His area of research is focused on the dynamic characteristics of the magneto-rheological vibration isolators developed by CVeSS member, Brian Southern.
