Zachary Detweiler is a graduate student in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech. He was born in Troy, PA and completed his undergraduate studies in Physics at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. Zach was deployed to Iraq with the PA Army National Guard, where he served as a gunner on an M1A1 Tank for 12 months.

Zach now works in the Vehicle Terrain Performance Laboratory (VTPL) with Dr. Ferris on creating uniformly spaced terrain topology data, vehicle dynamic modeling, terrain modeling, and tire models that capture planar tire envelopment. The main purpose of Zach’s research is to incorporate high fidelity terrain measurements into vehicle simulations.
