Welcome to the Virginia Tech’s Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department web site.  Here you’ll find a lot of useful information about our undergraduate and graduate degree programs, research activities and opportunities, application process, our faculty and students, and much more about the ME Department. The ME Department has a long tradition of excellence in education with an effective hands-on minds-on approach to learning, a landmark of our College of Engineering. ­­

Mechanical engineering is the broadest and most diverse of engineering disciplines, encompassing a variety of engineering fields and a wide range of technologies and products which affect numerous aspects of human life and society.  Mechanical engineers study, innovate, design, and develop a variety of products extending from robots to automated cars, jet engines to satellites, medical instruments to artificial organs, biome­dical products to disease mitigating mechanisms, manufacturing tools to modern materials, and smart transportation systems to advanced utility networks, among numerous others.  Mechanical Engineers do this by utilizing fundamental technical areas such as acoustics, dynamics, vibrations, automatic controls, mechanics, computer-aided design, energy management, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, turbomachinery, tribology, robotics, and biomechanics, just to name a few.  Mechanical engineering is a challenging, rewarding, and highly respected profession. Our department supports this profession through its commitment to excellence in its teaching, research, scholarship, and service missions.

Our faculty are highly accomplished and many of them are world-renowned in their specific fields of specialty. Their advanced research practice and exceptional expertise enrich the learning experiences of our students.  Our comprehensive state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories provide unprecedented opportunities for students to learn, practice, and conduct research in mechanical engineering.  Opportunities for cross- and inter-disciplinary research and studies are abundant, which is another milestone of our department. A large number of ME Affiliate and Adjunct faculty across many areas of engineering and science collaborate with our faculty and support our students. Furthermore, the department’s strong ties with the University Institutes provides additional enriched learning and research opportunities at both graduate and undergraduate levels.

We admit and graduate students, who not only strive to excel but also love challenges; they leave the campus as highly skilled and sought after engineers and leaders.  There are plenty of opportunities for our students to get involved with hands-on projects, experiential learning, and technical competitions such as Robotic Challenges, Formula Car, Additive Manufacturing, and many more. They also get engaged as volunteers in a variety of humanitarian service projects ranging from design and development for local industry to designing and building infrastructure in developing nations overseas.   Our students are exceedingly in demand and industry and government offer tremendous recruitment opportunities on campus.

We greatly value diversity within the department and society and strive to promote, enhance, and create a totally inclusive and caring environment for all of our constituents.  I am proud of the accomplishment of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are each exemplary in their own respect.  All of us at the ME department strive to excel in everything we do and serve our constituents as much as possible.  We do our best to exemplify the Virginia Tech’s spirit of Ut Prosim (That I may serve). ME Department Mission

The Virginia Tech Mechanical Engineering Department serves its students, alumni, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the nation through a variety of academic, research and service activities.

Our mission is to: Serve our undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the nation through a variety of teaching, research, service, and scholarly activities. Dedicated to excellence in research and scholarship and to upholding the highest standards in the overall quality of our programs, we prepare engineers for successful careers in industry, government, and academia. We emphasize engineering principles, hands-on projects, open-ended problem solving, and the essential skills of teamwork, communication, and ethics, and integrate these into the education of each of our students.

ME Program Educational Objectives

Within a few years after graduating from the Mechanical Engineering Department at Virginia Tech, the graduates will attain:

  1. Positions where they utilize fundamental technical knowledge and skills in mathematics, science, and engineering to analyze and solve problems, and apply these abilities to generate new knowledge, ideas or products in academia, industry or government.
  2. Practical experience and organizational skills, enabling them to interact and communicate effectively (written and/or oral) with others (e.g., supervisor, client and/or team) with regard to the diversity of the stakeholders involved in their work.
  3. Roles of increasing responsibility leading to leadership positions that benefit themselves, their employers and society.
  4. Skills in life-long learning through: (a) self-study, (b) continuing education/short courses or workshops, and/or (c) formal graduate level education, and encourage co-workers to have this same motivation.
  5. Roles in professional and personal life where they demonstrate professional and ethical responsibilities toward peers, employers, and society and follow these precepts in their daily lives.
