BOLT (Battery Operated Land Transport) Team
The BOLT (Battery Operated Land Transport) Team of Virginia Tech is comprised of senior mechanical engineering students who take an existing street bike frame and suspension and convert the power plant to total electric. The existing gas tank and engine is removed and replaced with a 100 V lithium polymer battery, Kollmorgen controller and electric motor. BOLTS current motorcycle has a Honda frame and suspension and has clocked top speeds in excess of 99 MPH! The team competes in multiple national competitions earning top places in their category and overall.
The mission of the Virginia Tech BOLT Senior Design Team is to maintain the reputation and history of innovation at Virginia Tech by building an all-electric motorcycle to compete in the AHRMA eMotoRacing series. The BOLT team is dedicated to evolving electric vehicle technology through design, construction, and demonstration of a high performance electric motorcycle and as a competition based team strives for nothing but the best performance on the track. By challenging the standards of performance, the team expects to increase the visibility of clean emissions motorsports while proving the viability of the technology itself.
